Research for Phase III of the Municipal Services Project (MSP) is organized into three stages. Stage one is a broad ‘mapping exercise’ designed to identify non-commercialized service delivery options and the conditions and norms that make them successful. Stage two is a series of detailed case studies representing a cross-section of services, regions and models. It will draw from examples highlighted by the mapping exercise as important to furthering our understanding of the (potential) success of alternative service delivery systems. The final stage of the project is a critical review of the research findings as a whole. It will emphasize their implications for service delivery options and health systems in South and Southern Africa (grounding the project once again in its initial regional focus).
